Equipment I'll just go over the main equipment I use and what I use it for. With new cameras coming out daily it would be impossible to keep up with all the features or to purchase each new camera, lens and flash that comes out. Cameras- For most of my photography, portrait and sports I use the Fuji S5. It's the only digital camera I've used that needs no or very little PhotoShop work done to the files to have a saleable picture. I shoot all of my images jpegs. Shooting RAW is better as it has more adjustments that can be made after you take the pictures. However my goal is to do none or very little photoshop work after I take the picture. Get it right when you take it and you don't have to spend hours later trying to PhotoShop it to look good. I have the Nikon D2X which I would use for big group shots, 40 or more people and an event such as a daylight NASCAR race. For smaller race events with fewer cars and action I use the Fuji S5 even though it takes less frames per second. Remember the more pictures you take the more you have to sort through later, time is money. Lenses-My main lens is the 70-200 2.8 lens. I use this for all my outdoor portraits and most sport events. I use a 24-120 lens for my indoor portraits since my indoor shooting area is pretty small. I use a 18-70 lens for wide angle shots. Flash-For outdoor I use a Vivitar 285. It can be used with auto settings or manual settings. With the manual settings you get the same amount of power and you can control the amount of light hitting your subject. I shoot a lot into the Sun and this can throw off a cameras auto settings. If you like to shoot your camera in the auto mode get a flash that is dedicated to your camera and you'll get excellent results in most situations. But as a professional you need excellent results in all situations not just most. For indoor flash I use Novatron units, when you have a small area you don't need mega powerful units. Ones that have an power setting know that is adjustable are better to fine tune than ones that just do like full power or 1/2 power for settings. |
